BMW has been known to make some of the best driver’s cars on the planet while Toyota’s expertise lies in developing hybrids and electric vehicles. In 2006, Toyota killed off its last sports car, the Celica to streamline costs and more importantly to project an eco friendly image.
However, Toyota realised that they need to cater to the enthusiast market to stay in tune with the times. The result was their collaboration with Subaru to develop the Toyota FT-86 sports car concept which is a rear-wheel drive sensation.
Now, the Japanese car maker is looking to up the game further by collaborating with BMW to develop an eco friendly sports car. The collaboration will allow BMW to benefit from fuel cell development and electric drivetrain from the Japanese car maker, while Toyota can benefit from BMW’s use of lightweight materials such as carbon fibre, perfect weight distribution and razor sharp drive dynamics.
