Keith Haring

Keith Haring — whose iconic art shaped much of the look of the 1980s — is celebrated in today’s Google Doodle.
Haring was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, May 4, 1958 — 54 years ago today. He died in 1990 from complications due to AIDS. He was just 31 years old.
He first caught the public eye with his chalk drawings in the New York subway system and began exhibiting his work in galleries soon after. His outlines, with their bold lines and bright colours, would become a huge influence on the aesthetic of the 80s.

The artist studied commercial art at the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh before switching to a fine arts focus. In 1978, he moved to New York City, where he took a strong interest the graffiti he saw on the city’s streets.
He gained prominence through the 80s and eventually counted Madonna, Jean-Michel Basquiatamong and Andy Warhol among his friends.
After his death February 16, 1990, Madonna dedicated the first N.Y. date of her Blond Ambition World Tour to Haring and donated all ticket sales from the show to AIDS charities.
